Elected fraternity president and to Phi Beta Kappa, he graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana with a BA in Philosophy in 1975. Before law school he was a claims representative with the Social Security Administration. During law school he was a judicial intern for U.S. District Court Judge John D. Holschuh, a hearing officer in the Columbus, Ohio City Attorney's Office, and a legal intern with the Ohio Attorney General's Office. He graduated in the top third of his class at the Ohio State University College of Law in 1981.

Chuck is a sustaining member of the Cincinnati Bar Association, serving on several committees, including both those on ethics and professionalism. He is also a member of the National College for DUI Defense, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Greater Cincinnati Criminal Defense Lawyers' Association, the Hamilton County Municipal Court Trial Lawyers' Committee, and the Lawyers' Club of Cincinnati, where he has served on the executive committee since 1987, including 1992 as president.

Chuck has been married since 1995 to Broadway star-at-heart Samantha Toberman. In 1989, he appeared with Samantha---and Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Matthew Broderick---in a major motion picture (in a moment of Glory). Chuck and Samantha continue to appear in many Broadway and regional theaters (just in time to take their seats). They are also volunteer ushers at the Aronoff Center, Ensemble Theater of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival, University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and Footlighters' Stained Glass Theater.

Chuck is an avid French hornist in several music groups, and has recently served as a board member of three of those groups: the Seven Hills Sinfonietta, the Cincinnati Community Orchestra, and the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. He is the leader of the Horns of Plenty Brass Quintet (in hiatus) and the Quintessence Woodwind Quintet (with recent appearances at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, the Cincinnati Museum Center, and the Lancaster Festival). He administers an email discussion list of almost 100 hornists in greater Cincinnati.

Chuck founded the Uplands Historic District Civic Association in the East Walnut Hills neighborhood where he has been struggling since 1992 to restore his 1893 house. Although he plays tennis several times weekly, his true athletic loves are scuba diving and Alpine skiing. He likes old cars, stouts, bargain shopping, cultural travel, and visiting with family near Dayton, Atlanta, and West Palm Beach.
